Covid-19 hit the workforce of the USe hard, as its unemployment rates went over the roof. During the Great Recession of 2007 and 2008, a total of 8.8 million people filed for unemployment benefits, while from February 2020 to May 2020 this number was more than 14 million.

What is the problem with unemployment benefits?

The government estimates a 16% unemployment rate in the country, which is truly unprecedented. To make matters worse, there is no unified unemployment benefit and safety net throughout the country, so every state can have their separate system for hardships like this. This is why many people do not get their unemployment benefit at all.

“Largely because state rules vary so much, the share of people the government counts as unemployed who actually receive unemployment benefits varies too. In March, just before the pandemic really began wreaking havoc on the economy, 65.9% of unemployed Massachusetts residents received benefit payments but only 7.6% of jobless Floridians did.” – Pew Research Center

What is more, young people seem to be at a much greater risk of losing their jobs due to COVID-19, as they mainly work in the most affected service sector. “Among the 19.3 million workers ages 16 to 24 in the economy overall, 9.2 million, or nearly half, are employed in service-sector establishments. ” – Pew Research Center

Most companies working in that sector find it hard to adapt to the rapid changes, or claim the funds provided by the state or the federal government to make their business going. All these factors make it difficult to keep their workforce employed, or even to keep their business going at all.

Due to these causes, the livelihood of thousands of families became threatened. Many don’t have enough money to put food on the table or to cover the rent and other expenses. As a result, they may need to face eviction, or they need to take on loans they will suffer to pay for decades.

There is no question about that we need to do something to help our fellows out. We can’t just sit and watch kids and their parents sent to the streets or starve due to the high unemployment rate and insufficient national safety net.

If you also care about the livelihood of others, and want to help out the needy in a serious global crisis like this, donate to organizations who deliver food, clothes and other essential products to the ones in need. We also feel obliged to keep small businesses going, so they can keep employing their employees, thus saving their jobs.
